Home Composting

Compost LogoComposting keeps organic materials out of our landfill, making additional space available for trash, and turns organic materials into a useful product. The composting process decomposes organic wastes in to a soil amendment that will improve soil structure, texture, and aeration, as well as increasing the soil’s water-holding capacity.

Recipe for success: In a wire, wood, or plastic bin (with air holes), place leaves, yard trimming, vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, cold wood ash, etc. Alternate green and brown layers, keeping food scraps well covered in the pile. Keep pile moist, but not soggy. It’s done when it’s dark and crumbly.CalRecycle's
